Roatán to Host the 34th National Assembly of Municipalities

The Association of Municipalities of Honduras (AMHON) has convened the 34th National Assembly of Municipalities, scheduled for May 27 and 28, 2024, in Roatán, Bay Islands. The event will bring together authorities from all 298 municipalities in the country, positioning itself as the most important deliberative forum on territorial development and citizen well-being.

Strengthening Local Governance

This edition reaffirms the Assembly as a key tool for institutional strengthening at the municipal level, ensuring orderly leadership transitions and promoting transparent administration. It emphasizes the need to integrate fundamental social issues into the national agenda for human and community development.

Social Issues as a Priority Focus

Key topics include: improving the education system, preventing and eradicating violence, combating human trafficking, and addressing migration comprehensively. These action lines aim to generate coordinated responses to the structural challenges faced by Honduran municipalities.

The real estate market in Roatán has grown in recent years, offering opportunities in land, beachfront homes, condominiums, and tourist developments. It is an ideal area for both investment and residence, with competitive prices compared to other Caribbean destinations. Additionally, foreign interest has driven improvements in infrastructure and services.

Broad and Interinstitutional Participation

The Assembly will be attended by 278 male mayors and 20 female mayors, along with representatives from the three branches of government, cabinet ministers, and international cooperation agencies. This broad participation makes the event a strategic platform for building consensus and fostering interinstitutional alliances.

Education and Violence: Urgent Matters

One of the main priorities will be educational infrastructure and the advancement of the “Champions for Education” initiative. In addition, policies will be discussed to prevent violence, particularly against women, girls, and vulnerable groups.

Migration: Local Challenges and Policies

Migration will also be a central issue. The Assembly will propose comprehensive local policies to address the root causes and consequences of migration, reinforcing the role of municipalities as key actors in territorial and human management.

Roatán: Epicenter of Municipal Dialogue

Roatán hosts the event, showcasing its strategic role in national development. Leaders will forge key agreements, build a common agenda, and improve life quality in Honduran municipalities.
